Art Classes
Oil Painting
Wednesdays
1p-3p
Ongoing
Creating art is one of those magical activities that seem to bring out the best in people. It is something that, no matter when one starts in life, gives the person a feeling of satisfaction and accomplishment. Even though painting is a solitary activity, the classroom environment provides feedback, guidance, friendship and occasionally, a masterpiece. The class has been taught at the Winterville Cultural Center for the past 7 years. Dortha Jacobson is an experienced teacher with a masters degree in Art Education. Her goal is to allow each student freedom to work at their own speed and to recognize their potential by giving suggestions and demonstrations. Students are introduced to color theory, given group challenges, taught awareness of values, taught how to critique a painting and given opportunities to exhibit their work in local shows. New students are welcomed at any time.

Folk Art Painting
Tuesdays
7p-9p
April 16-May 7
Folk art is a form of art made by self-taught individuals who have had no formal training in the traditional arts. Folk art frequently depicts scenes from the individual’s life combined with people, animals, and sometimes fantasy images. Folk art often simplifies the subject by using geometric shapes, bold colors, and no constraints on proportions. Sherre Watwood is a self-taught artist who grew up exposed to art through her father-a master woodworker and craftsman, her paternal grandfather-a rural landscape painter, and her paternal aunt-a realistic oil painter–all self-taught artists. She has always been drawn to the folk art style of painting with its bright, vivid colors and bold shapes. After moving to Winterville in 2019, Sherre joined the Winterville Arts Council. Receiving much encouragement from other members, she began to paint on a regular basis. In her folk art classes, students will focus on recognizing basic geometric shapes of animals, people, and foliage and incorporate those crude shapes into creating folk art style subjects. Students will experiment with using coordinating and contrasting colors to bring drama into their art. Students will also explore techniques of painting boldly and loosely.
